Boss Hatch Breaks a New Beginning

(I made a new logo! Like it?)
Boss Hatch is now under new management! Hi, I am Jim Gordon. Let me begin by saying it is a pleasure to be writing for everyone and I look forward to learning from you, the reader, as you will hopefully learn from me. Let’s get some background and credentials out of the way before I begin to dive into this.
- I am 21 years old
- I attend Clemson University in South Carolina (go Tigers!)
- I am a Senior in Industrial Engineering
- I own 10 websites
- What I currently do:
- Web design
- Development (coding stuff)
- Web consulting
- Human factors
My experience with being an entrepreneur is basically summed up in many of the websites I have created. For instance, I was almost finished with creating a social networking site. I had the legal stuff worked out, contracts written up, bank account almost created, and a few investors - then our coder dropped out. We didn’t really have the time to find another college student to pick up the slack so we dropped the project entirely. Now I mostly do freelance, which is much more accommodating to my busy schedule.
Boss Hatch will be centered around young entrepreneurs, obviously. My intention is to revolve this blog around everything that affects young entrepreneurs. You will learn how I think people should approach entrepreneurship, how other people think, and how others have approached it. To those who are starting a business, there will be endless information that I will try my best to keep up with… information that will change the way you approach business and will challenge you to draw dynamic opinions on legislation and everything else having to do with being a young CEO.
I hope you come along for the ride - buckle yourself in.

Welcome Jim! I’m interested in your web sites and hearing about how you use them to sell and market. My daughter has been selling and marketing jewelry on a myspace site (www.myspace.com/yellowheart). Fairly successul but I’m interested in what she should do to kick it up a notch.

Thanks! My main suggestion to your daughter would be to bring her business outside of myspace. Using a social networking tool for business is clever, but only reaching a certain demographic. There’s no real excuse to leave it only to people on mypsace since websites have such little overhead! She needs to find out WHO is buying her products, what their interests are, and design a site around those interests. Since her business is already fairly successful, I think this move would bring her out to a much broader audience since she can work on improving her site’s SEO (Search Engine Optimization). There are hundreds of millions of potential buyers out there - tap into that market!
The main point I should emphasize is that many people will discount her legitimacy since she does business through myspace. It’s not that it is unconventional, but instead unprofessional. People like to see a firm establishment and trust in a business, and advertising through a social networking site may not be the best way to convey that. It taps into the younger market, but still leaves much of it untouched.
I hope this helps and thank you for your comment!
