How Important Is Ethical Business Behavior?
As a boss, you will confront a world of people. You will also hire some of these people. Who should you hire?
With my previous work experience, I found that people are the most productive when they are happy (seems fitting, right? A happy worker is a productive worker). Ethical behavior needs to be one of the top attributes you should look for in an employee. If you notice an employee can’t seem to draw the line between his/her bad mood from outside of the workplace, action needs to be taken. Productivity relies on ethical behavior. One angry employee starts the domino effect - they will do something to make another employee impatient or angry, and it all goes downhill from there.
How do you prevent this before it happens?
Start a conversation with your interviewee. Figure out what is going on in his/her head. Asking if they “can separate work from your social life” will get you one response (unless the person is an idiot).
If you have a current employee who is having problems, meet with the person and try to work things out (or reference the employee to someone who can help).
This brings me to my final solution - make people comfortable. Having an employee who lacks ethic can also be a sign that your business environment needs change. If your employees are uncomfortable, their minds will wander, they will be unhappy and want to go home, and productivity will plummet. Remember, being productive = good.
It looks like Google has the same idea. Take a look at their office - even though I think their carpet is a hideous puke-green.
