Oh Crap Situation 10: Saying ‘Yes’

You’ve opened up a consulting firm and want to get off to a big start. Your business is your part-time job. Since you need money to live, you work part-time at a local store and get paid by the hour. Suddenly, jobs start coming in at a very steady pace. Doors are opening all around you and to minimize risk you accept them all. After a happy night of sleep, you wake up and realize you accepted too many jobs! Who would have thought? What should you do?

I’d hope that on at least one or two of the consulting jobs you’ve gotten a decent advance so you can, with shortish notice quit your part time job and put your head down and work your tail off for several weeks…
Of, if you’ve gotten a really big advance and you truly can’t get it all done, hire a contractor to help.

But what if you don’t have the credentials for an immediate advance? These are your first jobs we’re talking about!
However, not taking an advance puts you in a position to be taken advantage of.
