Second Life and Business

I know there is a Second Life blog on my network, but I really think the whole thing is crap. Call me ignorant, call me biased, but doing any sort of business over Second Life is absurd. I’ve talked to several people who have actually done some business over Second Life. They said it was a professional atmosphere… until Muscle-Man Phil walked in with his ego equaling the size of his virtual… bursting biceps. At the end of the conversation, they start looking very embarrassed and talk about how ridiculous it was.
Programs like Second Life aren’t designed to be usable in business. By this, I mean they aren’t designed to cater to efficient transmission of communication. If you scheduled a meeting on Second Life, you will have to tell 95% of the members how to play the game.
Where am I?
How do I get to where you are?
I can’t move. My computer is locking up.
In my opinion… IN MY OPINION… Instant Messengers seem FAR easier. Skype is easier. Any sort of voice chat program (Ventrilo, for instance) is easier than trying to teach people how to sign up/download/install/navigate a 3D world. Have I used Second Life? Yes. I played it for a few months before I figured out I could go outside or talk on AOL Instant Messenger to accomplish the exact same tasks I do in the game.
As nice as it is for some activities, conducting business just seems unnecessary. CNN keep plugging it as something revolutionary - well, it isn’t. The article I linked regarded autism, and how easy it is for people with autism to express emotion with Second Life. It seems like CNN is getting paid to plug Second Life. So three cheers for autistic expression, but minus 1,000,000 points as a poor business engine.
There have to be people who visit this blog and disagree with me. I want to hear the other perspective.
