Boss Hatch - Entrepreneurs in the Making

The Belated Sunday Young Entrepreneur News

by Jim Gordon on December 10th, 2007

Sorry about the late Sunday-Monday news, everyone.  I am studying for my finals, so I am getting a bit behind with what really matters - surfing the internet!   This week has been pretty quiet, and I haven’t really stumbled upon much about young entrepreneurs.  Either way, here’s your belated Sunday news:

onrec.com beaten

HA! We beat onrec.com to the punch with this story (after we were beaten by another site).  The only reason I am posting this article is because it has an image attached from the actual awards ceremony.  The article didn’t even mention Oliver Bishop winning the award WITH Dan McGuire… poor Oliver.

How can I get press coverage

An interesting article I found was CNN’s response to a question asking how you can get press coverage.  Here is basically what the article says:

  • Establish yourself as an expert in the field
  • Sign up for Google alerts on your subject
  • Email editors offering your spin - but don’t annoy them

I’m assuming that isn’t a guaranteed way of getting coverage, but it’s a pretty simple start!

Finding Business Startup Money

If you have been habitually reading the Hatch (the Hatch, being BossHatch… yes, I am trying to come up with a fun word to use) - or if you read my article on Saturday, this article proves to have mega-relevance.  Never heard someone use mega-relevance?  Let me be the first.  As I was saying… this article has some mega-relevance (I abuse fun words).  Marci Alboher of the New York Times writes about where you can find the money to move out of your job to start your own business.

The basic gist of  the article is this: save, stash, and borrow if you have to.  Now that I have mastered the total obvious, I’ll have to ask you to read the article before I do a total analysis on effective saving and spending habits for young entrepreneurs (thanks to a lack of time).

I have an exam at 8AM and it is currently 4:12AM.  Wish me luck.

This is something that I am struggling with for the company I work for, they are an industry leader yet have very little national press coverage.

Do you think it is the effort in the wrong areas that is causing the lack of media attention? Some executives like to take the hands-off approach when they are doing well (on paper). Driving a business, needless to say, is about weighing your efforts to maximize the potential return. Some prefer to take that “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” approach, but they ultimately figure out that if they aren’t exploring new facets of marketing and production - the business is stagnant!
